DUE TO THE APPROACH OF THE DATE AT WHICH THE GREAT BRITAIN WILL FORMALLY NOTIFY THE INTENTION OF EXITING THE EU (TRIGGERED BY ARTICLE 50 OF THE TREATY OF THE EUROPEAN UNION), ONE OF THE DECISIONS THAT WILL NEED TO BE FORMULATED BY THE EU – BY COMMON CONSENT OF ALL THE GOVERNMENTS OF THE MEMBER STATES – WILL BE THE RELOCATION OF EUROPEAN AGENCIES THAT ARE LOCATED, AT PRESENT, IN GREAT BRITAIN, THE EUROPEAN MEDICINES AGENCY (EMA) INCLUDED
The EMA is responsible for the scientific evaluation of applications for European authorizations for marketing of medicinal products (centralized procedure) with the role to stimulate innovation and research in the pharmaceutical field.
The EMA is one of the largest and most important European agencies from the perspective of the business which it manages, the budget and allocated staff.
The decision to advance a possible candidacy of Romania for hosting the EMA in Bucharest is based, amongst others, on the fact that Romania already hosts several profile institutions, including laboratories and pharmaceutical companies – Victor Babes National Institute, Cantacuzino National Institute of Research, Ana Aslan Gerontology and Geriatric National Institute etc. as well as important international actors from the pharmaceutical field which represent a consistent segment of the profile market.
